Dyslexia Affects As Many As 1 in 5 People
We specialize in explicit, multi-sensory, phonics-based interventions for children and adults with dyslexia and others, who struggle with reading, spelling, fluency, prosody, grammar and basic punctuation skills and/or comprehension and critical thinking skills. Research indicates that dyslexia affects more than 20% of the population--at least 1 in 5--and more often than not goes undiagnosed. Dyslexia is the most common cause of reading, writing, and spelling difficulties that range anywhere from mild to moderate to severe or profound. Of all children staffed into special education programs for reading deficits, 80% of them are dyslexic! Dyslexics are bright people whose academic performance does not match their potential for learning. They CAN read...but only up to a point...and often they are terrible spellers, who struggle to learn words for the weekly spelling test but can't retain them from one week to the next. They can't spell those words when writing sentences or stories--not even high-frequency words like because, friend, and does. Using the Barton Reading & Spelling System, an Orton-Gillingham-influenced program that is systematic and phonics based, we offer explicit, simultaneously multisensory intervention. In addition, we include the Lindamood Phonemic Sequencing (LiPS) program for students who need intensive intervention at phonemic awareness level. Comprehensive diagnostic testing identifies areas of weakness and looks for the symptoms of dyslexia. A prepared report for the client includes findings, observa-tions, and a targeted plan for intervention. Related experience includes:
